Lately I'm a bit depressed. There are a few things that went wrong in my life and there's absolutely nothing I can do about it. I'm pretty sure that you know this terrible feeling… of helplessness. I lie in bed, imagining the knight in shimmering armor that will come one day, sweep me off my feet and all that and provide a happily-ever-after, and then I turn to the other side, remind myself that happy endings live only in fairytales, and fall asleep. But I think that you should never say die. You can never know what's around the corner. Maybe my perfect match will arrive at my door tomorrow. Maybe our savior is closer than we think, among us.The connection between my search and my far-away homeland "search" for president is simply stunning. The search for a savior – one who'll literally save Lebanon, won't be in vain. I trust the brave members of the parliament, they'll vote for the best man. They'll vote fearlessly despite the threat of foreign interests inside Lebanon, interests we thought we had driven out after the murder of Hariri RIP.

Last week I saw the wonderful (yet long….) movie Titanic, which inspired me to draw this. I consider the presidential elections an extremely important event for both present and future of Lebanon.

These days Lebanon is experiencing a delicate situation and therefore we need a president who'll take care only of the Lebanese interests, and not of foreign interests which mysterious foreigners (and their allies among the Lebanese) are trying to promote.

I wonder, what is your opinion? Who will be chosen? Who'll make the best for Lebanon?

Hiroshima, this is the first thing pops into my head when I see the last news flashes about the Iranian president Mahmud Ahmadinejad. I am horrified when I realize that this man will possess a nuclear bomb someday. It's even more frightening when I suddenly remember that he has "minions" around my beloved country-Bashar Al-Asad's Syria and Hald Mashal's Hamas. Furthermore, he has a loyal partner also inside Lebanon, Hassan Nasrallah's Hizballah. Lately, he sent his greetings to Nasrallah-"the winner in July war". Maybe he's a winner, but we know how many of the Lebanese lost their money, property and lives in this war.

A year has passed since the war in Lebanon took the homes and lives of so many Lebanese people. Sitting here in Germany, away from the battlefield, I think of all my friends who have lost their families during that war, that served for nothing but excuse the miserable existence of Hizballah. I'm furious. Not only because they have caused so much destruction, but because they keep planning the next step. As if there hasn't been enough fighting and killing, they dig the graves of the next victims of their acts. And only because they know that their end is near. I quoted a line from Shakespeare's "Hamlet",in which the exiled prince returns to Denmark and finds a man digging a grave and singing. Hamlet asks whose grave it is, and after getting a shrewd answer, he tells the gravedigger that the grave must be his, since he is lying in it.

A New Face in My Portfolio

On May 16, 2007 Nicolas Sarkozy became the 6th president of the French Fifth Republic. The guy seems pretty reasonable to me… Just last week he sent his foreign minister Kouchner on his first trip out of France directly to Lebanon. The visit was said to reaffirm "French solidarity with Lebanon and its people…". Kouchner also delivered a letter from Sarkozy expressing support for Lebanon and for quick establishment of the international tribunal where Hariri's assassins will be tried. Furthermore France is determined that "stability reign in South Lebanon", and that the presidential elections "should work on fortifying Lebanon's sovereignty and pave the way toward reforms in constitutional and administrative institutions". Now that’s the kind of things I like to hear from a new French government.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has also made a few remarks that put him in my good books. He condemned the terrorist attacks last week (which is something I'd expect any Secretary General to do) and he appealed to the Lebanese people to unite in confronting the challenges facing our country. That might not be such a revolutionary remark, but there's something in the way he expresses his support that makes his words seem very sincere. Calling on the Lebanese to unite in the face of threats to their stability and security certainly gives him the right to enter this post.

In yet another controversial speech last Friday we had the pleasure of hearing Nasrallah's first comments regarding the situation in Nahr el-Bared camp, we were reminded Siniora is a puppet of the U.S. and received a warning that Lebanon is risking getting dragged into America's war against Al-Qaeda. I know we should be cautious about the aid we get, and Lebanon is in need of a range of important things and not just arms, but if anyone is responsible for setting up and training fighters who interfere with our goals of reform, stability and prosperity there are other people to point a finger at before the U.S.

I'm not that into soccer. It's almost like confessing a sin… All my friends have been watching the Champion's League games, and are waiting anxiously for the final game in Athens. Lately I've been watching the games with them. It was hard to understand what was going on in the beginning, but after a few games (and lots of lengthy explanations from my friends) I kind of got it. At least I get to spend some quality time with them, and after the game is over and they calm down we sit around and talk about our studies, philosophy, politics, Lebanon. I actually started liking these evening we spend eating fries in front of the TV watching soccer games. My friends want Milan to win – I am just there to enjoy myself and don't really care who wins, but my friends are so excited about it that I also started hoping for Milan to win.Yet in this atmosphere of preparing for a fierce fight I cannot forget the grave situation in my homeland, where the battle will result in more than winning a cup.

In Memory of one of Lebanon's Martyrs of Journalism

On May 3rd, 2006 during a ceremony held on World Press Freedom Day by UNESCO Beirut, a torch was lit in commemoration of the last fallen journalist Gebran Tueni.
As an artist I sometimes let my mind wander and I daydream about a different reality I would like to see for my country and the Lebanese nation.
When I read biographies of people like Gebran Tueni it's almost impossible to believe this was a real person and the things written in his biography did actually take place. It's like some of my day dreams came true.
A respected journalist, son of publishing magnate, and former statesman who served as an ambassador, a minister, and a member of Parliament and represented Lebanon at the United Nations. Tueni studied in France, returned to Lebanon and became a lead editorialist in An-Nahar newspaper.
The main thing that jumps to my mind when I hear the name Tueni is his part and mainly his vocal drive to free Lebanon from Syrian occupation, and especially his courage to speak up against Syria whilst still residing in Lebanon.
The massive car blast on the 12th of December, 2005 was the only way the goal of the Syrian-installed regime to silence the press could be achieved.
At the ceremony a book named "One Hundred Years of Red Ink", a commemoration for all assassinated Lebanese journalist over the last decade, was handed to journalists and students. The book covers the history of press freedom violations in Lebanon after many journalists had to pay a price to mark and defend press freedom in Lebanon. I feel sad we have such a history, and enough to fill the pages of an entire book.
Tueni is credited for fueling the momentum of demonstrations which culminated in the one-million-strong march on Martyr's Square on March 14, 2005 and for turning the tide against Syria. During the demonstrations, Tueni and his followers would take the following oath: "We swear by God Almighty, Muslims and Christians, to forever remain united, long live Lebanon and the Lebanese". May the torch lit at the ceremony, and all that’s being done towards the fight for freedom of the press kindle our hearts and give us hope for better days for Lebanon and our nation.

Are any of our leaders at all capable of calling us to order?!? Are they crying out loud just to get attention? Do they even feel the slightest obligation to the Lebanese nation? Or do they prefer to put on a hypocritical show of emotion every time something happens that shocks us and leaves us with a terrible sense of discomfort and fear. We are not safe in our country, not in our neighborhood, not even in our own homes. We cannot trust our neighbors and always check behind us to see if anyone is following. When will they sincerely feel for the nation, when will they behave like true leaders and lead us to prosperity and peace between us brothers? Do they really feel our sorrow?

As the crocodile our leaders nature is to cry and sob like a lost boy, to gain our sympathy, to provoke us to come closer to them and then to snatch at us...

Spring has come to my beloved home land and here, in Germany, chilly and cloudy. In this part of the year, Christians celebrate the Easter holiday and the streets are full of decorations and colored eggs. Yesterday I went out to the street but couldn't find my place. Again, same feeling comes up with one question – do I belong here?

My father wants me to quit my studies and return to Lebanon. I have considered it before, especially after the war that had ruined my beloved homeland. It seemed to me that I needed to do something to help my country, and quitting my studies was a fair sacrifice.

But this is not the case now: my father wants me to quit because he is concerned. My mama(umi el3aziza) wants me to go back to Lebanon because she thinks that there I will be safe.

It surprised me, I thought that they were liberal enough to understand that the West isn’t their enemy, but now they are terrified. They are afraid that my studies might corrupt my mind and set me against Islam. There is nothing I can say, or do, that can convince them otherwise. I have got to tell you that I wear the traditional clothes and refrain from the bad culture around me, because I honor not only my parents, but also Islam and my tradition. They want what they think is best for me, and right now, they think it is best is for me to leave Germany and go back home, to Lebanon.

I understand them, I can see how hard it is for them to get used to the language and customs. But I know that my studies are no threat to my conscience, my morality and my tradition, and that right now, my going back to Lebanon isn't going to do any good. They don't agree with me. They insist I should leave for Lebanon, as soon as possible.

So I will return. But first, I'm going to finish my studies and start a career, so that when I do arrive, I will have something to give back to my country and to my family. They are just going to have to understand that the university isn't a threat and that Germany isn't going to harm me.

Snow

Here in Germany, winter arrived late this year. Perhaps it is due to global warming. But eventually it came and now we have great snow.. Last weekend I drove with a few friends from the university to Austria and had a wonderful time at St. Anton ski resort.

It reminded me of my first visit to the Shuf - mountains in my beloved homeland. It was winter and we played in the snow until my fingers nearly froze and Ummi warmed them by blowing hot air from her mouth onto my trembling blue hands…

Today, the snow is still white and the beautiful Shuf stand peacefully as a great creation of Allah, but underneath, the ground continues to tremble.

After destroying the summer tourism season, it seems that Hizballah is working hard to create another avalanche, in order to bury the winter season also.

Please let us enjoy the freedom and beauty of our homeland. Stop the killing, stop ruining our lives.

Who assassinated Rafik Al- Hariri?

Two years have passed since the ground trembled in Beirut, and all over Lebanon. Rafik Al-Hariri was assassinated by those who wish to throw us back into the dark days of the 1970's civil war. Hariri was a brave man that believed in the freedom of Lebanon. His vision is our heritage. The tears I cry over his death are of sorrow for his lost, and of anger for those heartless foreign forces, that are playing in the Lebanese playground, killing us, killing our hope for a peaceful living in our homeland.

Never really understood this issue of burning tires in demonstrations. It causes air pollution, bad smell, and reflects bad taste. What are you trying to do, Seid Nasserallah? You claim to repair all the Lebanese faults but you cause so many of them. You turn into fire and smoke our national hopes, our freedom and our honor.

Nasserallah's new promise: more and more black days, and more separation between the young Lebanese. In Beirut, following the political struggle between the gigantic forces in Lebanon, Many demonstrations were held by both sides. Hariri's movement vs. Hizballah, with so much emotions and rhetoric's.

Without stating my opinion, I must say that seeing the pathetic Hizballah activists paying money to people to take part in the Demonstrations.

Nasserallah, you say that we are all Mukawameen, but it seems that not enough people actually support this line of thought and action.

Comeback

It's been a long time since my last post. Not that I didn't have anything to say. I did and still do, but as summer ended, my grandmother, a woman I admire and deeply honor, got this terrible cold that developed into a horrible Pneumonia. Understanding that she was in serious condition, I took the first flight to Beirut and rushed to be with her. Long weeks I sat by her bed, praying to Allah to help her survive. Being a Lebanese patriot, she lived all of her life in our beloved country, and on those rare occasions when she came to Berlin to visit the family, she felt like a Cedar tree that was torn off from its roots. She was 85 years old. She died peacefully, ready to meet her destiny. Allah yerahmuha.
It took me time to work through my feelings of loss and sorrow. I shed tears of love and pain; of longing to this woman I loved so deeply.

Meanwhile, things happened In Lebanon and being there, so close to what was happening, I wanted to react, to say what I have to say but was too depressed and distracted.
Now, slowly returning to my normal everyday life, I reinitiated my blog.
Looking back at the first posts, and remembering the hard days of war and destruction, some of witch I witnessed myself in Beirut, I decided to present a small gallery of my recent drawings, adding a few that were never posted.
Please join me to a guided tour or, if you like, a little time-travel to the events of my beloved country and my emotions in reaction to them, in my personal blog.

It seems the war is over. We are still bleeding. Lebanon is cut and bruised. From outside and from within.Do we have to hurt ourselves just to prove our belief in Allah?
Do we have to suffer and cause others great pain, as part of our worship of Allah?
All people were created by Allah. Man was not created to suffer and to hurt other human beings. Any human being wants to live in peace and avoid pain.The great sword of Islam, for ages protected our great nation, but also shed so much Arab blood.
In Lebanon, Suna, Druze, Christians and Shia will have to learn to live together, to bridge the gaps of mistrust and misunderstanding.
Those who think that they can take over our country, and convert us all to the only truth that is their own, are wrong and dangerous.
May Allah help us at these hard times.

South Lebanon

Who remembers now the names of the towns and villages in the south, those that suffered so much destruction during the war? All those usually un-famous little places, picturesque landscapes, suddenly stormed by war and sorrow.
Once captured the headlines of all media – TV, radio and internet. Now soon forgotten.
How can we make sure that those beautiful places will remain forgotten, but will live peacefully and flourish?
Seeing our national army's troops deploying to the south, gives me hope that a strong Lebanon will stand against all those external forces (Israel, but also the Syrians and the Iranians that created Hezbollah and pushed us all to this bloody war).
PM Seniora, May your tears symbolize the raindrops of the renewing Lebanon. The spring water of growth and power. With the help of Allah, This army will grow and be strong and have a stabilizing effect on Lebanon.

So much agony.
So much pain.
The war is over, for the mean time and I am so worried about my country.
The south of Lebanon is almost completely ruined. Many civilians turned into refugees during the war, and now returned to find their houses ruined.
Was this worth it? The high cost of the war, and for what? I hear the voices from Lebanon – after the regular patriotic "blame the usual suspects", it is Hizbollah who is to blame.
Go away, Seid Hassan. Leave the lebanese and let them live their life with no wars and disasters.
We do not need heroes, we need more sense and wisdom.

Cease fire (but every thing inside burns…)

The fire has stopped. In the meantime, it seems very fragile and I pray to Allah that peace and quietness will remain in my beloved country.
It makes me sick to see all those overwhelming victory speeches. I understand the Lebanese peoples need to give the terrible events some kind of meaning, and blaming the Zionists is always the default but….
Why did it start in the first place? I know some Lebanese prisoners are being held for many years by Israel. I remember the negotiations to liberate them were productive. So why set the area on fire??
After years of rehabilitation, at the beginning of the tourism season, that was planed to be the most productive and enriching in years, why ruin it all?
I believe that other reasons, political and personal of people who do not care about Lebanon, stand behind Hezbollah's attack on Israeli troops last month. Those who started the fire do not see or care about the true interests of the Lebanese people. Perhaps they do care about foreign interests of other forces in the region.
Leaders and supporters of Hezbollah, How can you look at yourself in the Mirror and feel happy with all the destruction you got Lebanon into??
The fire stopped for the time, but my heart is burning.
People of Lebanon: It is vital that a Flourishing liberated Lebanon will be part of the world's free nations and not an isolated, defeated and ruined land, abused by others. Don’t let this happen to us again.

The Loss of Innocence

It has been almost two weeks since the Qana event.
Since that sad day until now a lot has been said about that event on the media. The internet is full with pictures from the Qana ruins. Those pictures are hard to watch… bodies of little children…
During my reading about Qana I have noticed that many of the articles are accusing Hizbollah of using the bodies of Qana victims in order to strengthen the impression that it was a massacre. Bodies are said to have been brought from other places and put in the ruins to create such an impression. One of the newspapers here in Berlin coined the term "Hizbollywood" to say that they are treating this war as a film making set (http://www.eureferendum.blogspot.com). I thought the resistance (Hizbollah) are loyal. Loyal to Lebanon, loyal to Elhakika (the truth)…
At first I could not believe what I saw, I thought to myself that there is no way that someone will be cruel enough to take advantage of such a horrible situation in order to influence someone's opinion. But as I kept reading and saw all the researches about the events in Qana and what was shown on the media I have come to understanding that Hizbollah made up many of those pictures. They also have made up the numbers. At first the media talked about almost 60 dead civilians, and now we all know that the real number is 28. Why did they lie about it, isn't 28 dead Lebanese enough? What was the point except using Lebaneses citizens to strengthen the war effect ?
It is hard for me to admit that Hizbollah are lying. They lied about Qana, and this is probably not the first time they did so. And worst off all - they lied to Lebanese citizens and they used Lebanese victims to do so..
My country, my beloved homeland is not and should not be a stage for Hollywood film directors that play around with their own brother's dead bodies.

Mideast cease-fire must achieve 'a long-lasting peace'

Brandenburg gate.
I stand here at one of the most famous sites of my city. Less then 20 years ago a tall wall, hardly penetrable divided east from west Berlin. A wall of hatred and agony. Many many people died trying to pass it. It was the symbol of the cold war.
Today, the wall is gone, vanished into the pages of dark history.
I stand here and think about my beloved Lebanon. How much more hatred, and pain? How many more will have to be killed, wounded, seek refuge from the roaring air-bombers, from internal militia clashes, from political assassinations?
Deep inside of me, I know these walls of hatred, these tremendous powers of destruction can be taken apart and a better Lebanon for us all can be created.
I want us all to see the ruins of Thachia el ganuv rehabilitated into a lovely new peaceful neighborhood.
Maybe the cease-fire will symbolize the beginning of a new Lebanon…
As the dove symbolizes Peace.

Qana

    The news struck me.

    Every time I close my eyes I see the terrible pictures of the dead children. How can it be?? I hope with the help of Allah children won't suffer in this war anymore.
    Last night I could not sleep. I was crying and crying and the tears would not dry. Our dead children, the future of our beloved nation being taken out of the ruins, lay one by one in a long line of dead little bodies. How can that be?
    I couldn't eat anything either, I had no appetite. I felt helpless and hopeless. Did not Lebanon suffer enough? After so many years of war, death and destruction, we want to become part of the peaceful, civilized world. A world in which atfal (children) play and grow up and go to school, not die from a barbarian Israeli attack.
    I pray to Allah, that better day will come and that Inshallah, we will reconstruct our nation.
    I hope now the whole world understands that enough is enough… that war is not the solution… and negotiation is. I can not believe that someone deliberately kills little children… I refuse to believe it…But what Israel did is Majzara - massacre … I have no other word to describe this. Little children paid with their life. May this be the last victims of this unnecessary war.

The humanitarian crisis in Lebanon

    As a Lebanese expatriate living in Germany, It is very hard and sad for me to see the TV reports of the war in Lebanon.
    Until 4 weeks ago, I thought that Lebanon regained it`s status as Switzerland of Middle East. I remeber my grandparents used to tell me stories about Lebanon in the past:
"... Lebanon in the mid-60s used to be Switzerland of the Middle East. We had one of the most beautiful countries on earth. We were so lucky to have such a pretty country, a very small country where you can ski and swim in the same season...".
    I was so proud to be a Lebanese... to know that I am a part of this special country. Now it seems like everything is collapsing in Lebanon, and it retreats back to the situation it was on 1982. Lebanon citizens suffer a lot, more than most of us can imagine. They are forced to leave their homes, and run away leaving everything behind, while they are exposed to Israeli attacks, day after day. And if this is not enough, they can't just get into a car and drive to a safe place. Most of the main roads and bridges have been destroyed or seriously damaged in the attacks so it became a huge problem to move from place to place.
    Lebanese citizens suffer due to a lack of fuel, medication, food and many other basic human needs. Hospitals are full, and hospital staff barely manage to care for the patients.
    I think the reason for this situation is very complicated. For years Lebanon has been split from the inside - civil wars, struggles for power between ethnic groups and incursions of outsiders (France, Israel, Syria... and now they say even Iran).
    I think that countries worldwide, especially the rich ones, must send a humanitarian assistance to the citizens of Lebanon immediately.

And I – stand here, far away… and cry for my country…

My name is Shirin.

I was born in Beirut, Lebanon. I am 22 years old, and i live in Berlin. I study art and education at the university. My family moved to Germany when i was 12 years old.

I miss Lebanon, my homeland very much. I belong there and hope with the help of Allah, to come back after completion of my studies. I care for my people and think they deserve more, to live a better life.

I like to create drawings to express my feelings, and sometimes have something to say about things that happen in my country. Now... I just don't know where to start..I feel so helpless... and sometimes I even cry at night and pray that with the help of Allah the war will end soon.

I have a lot of friends and family there, and I myself was in Beirut at the begigning of the attack. It took me about a week to get out and come back to Germany. Since I came back I keep in touch with my family there and know exactly what is going on in Lebanon...
I invite you to visit me and get to know me. As I wrote before, I create drawings as a way to express myself. I saw a lot of blogs about the war, and I thought to do something different. I intend to add one of my drawings each time I will update the blog, in order to express my opinion about the situation in Lebanon.
